What is Thyroid Ablation?

Thyroid nodule ablation uses heat or chemicals (ethanol) to shrink or destroy thyroid nodules without surgery. The most common technique of thermal (heat) ablation is radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The advantages of ablation over surgery include:
  • Ablation avoids the need for post-procedural thyroid hormone replacement
  • Ablation is done in the office under local anaesthetia
  • Ablation affords a quick recovery time
  • Ablation has excellent outcomes with regards to shrinking nodules
  • Complications of ablation are rare
